I promise I will get out of the mid-1800s soon, but I saw this two-piece day dress and I just had to share it. Because look at that sapphire silk! Great balls and cotillions, that is just such a shimmering, arresting hue.
This kind of fabric gives me vapors.
It’s Jacquard woven, so it’s further along the industrial weaving technology story. Jacquard looms helped to speed up complex weaving as well as provide a kind of programming framework via punch cards–this eventually paved the way for computers.
Black on blue is one of my favorite combinations, and though it looks quite modern to our eyes (this particular colorway seemed pretty prevalent in the late 1980s) it’s far from it. Though the gown itself is certainly conservative, it nonetheless has a beautiful silhouette. The bodice would be at home in the 1880s, too.

this blog will always be kind of a mess.

NICOLE BYER
2021 | 73rd Primetime Emmy Awards, Los Angeles (September 19)I would just like to say that I am very proud of myself for correctly identifying this as Christian Siriano.
I love this especially because it would look truly pathetic and/or goofy on a thin person. The excellence of the design is that it is about her and her body, you know? Which, of course, Siriano is so appreciative of generally, the reality of bodies. It’s a celebration of her body. So she looks like the embodiment of delight, and also a particular poofy purple flower that I can’t remember the name of. (although I think bigger earrings would have set off the updo better.)
Never forget that Christian Siriano started on Project Runway like “I can’t design for fat people” and then Tim Gunn was like “well then you’re not very good,” and Christian decided to get good.
